Many of us will be lucky enough to have our grandchildren visiting us here in Spain. So we get in the car and drive to Alicante or Murcia airport to collect our precious little members of the family, bring them home and spoil them while we can.

Stop!
Before you set out on the trip along the infamous N332, reputedly the most dangerous road in Spain ask yourself whether you have equipped the car for your passengers.

It is a legal requirement to fit the appropriate child safety seats / restraints in cars when carrying young children and babies under 3 years of age . It is illegal and potentially fatal to carry children in cars without this equipment, failure to do so can result in prosecution or something un-thinkable.

It is the drivers responsibility to ensure that children under the age of 14 years are either using an appropriate child restraint or an adult seat belt.

The Law
Children under 3 years old MUST use a child restraint appropriate for their weight and age.(the adult seat belt in not sufficient)
Rearward facing seat belts are designed to be fitted in the rear as well as the front. You should ALWAYS put a rearward-facing baby seat in the rear if front passenger airbag is fitted.

It is advisable always to seat children in the rear seat if possible.

Children aged between 3 and 11 years and under 1.5 metres MUST always wear an appropriate child restraint or adult seat belts with a ‘Booster seat’

As a driver, if you are convicted of failing to ensure that a child passenger is wearing a seat belt or child restraint can face a heavy fine and could also affect any claims against your motor insurance.

The most serious penalty of all could be that of loss of life.  When deciding what child restraints to use the following data should be followed.

Infant under 9 kg (20lb) approx 0-9 mnths  :  Rear Facing
Toddler 9 to 18kg (20 to 40 lb) approx 9 mnths – 4 yrs  :  Forward Facing

Pre-school or Primary Grade
More than 18kg (40lb) approx 4-6yrs  :  Booster Seat with adult seat belt
NB Booster seat highly recommended until 60 to 80lbs.
