| Guardamar del Segura |

In 1829 an earthquake completely destroyed the original walled city and the castle that was at its centre, though remains of these can still be seen. This forced the inhabitants to move to Guardamar's present location closer to the coast and to design the town so that it could withstand earthquakes. At the end of the 19th century the town experienced serious problems as a result of the advancing sands. Planting rows of pine trees, which now give Guardamar del Segura its uniquely striking combination of woodlands and beach, have halted the advance. The historical heritage of Guardamar is explained in the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum and the Municipal Arts Centre.
With its many Spanish shops, bars and restaurants mixed with a few new English ones, you can now find all you could need, along with the beautiful park walks and the sandy beach that stretches over 14 Kilometres. Guardamar also plays hosts to many local fiestas like the Moors and Christians, L'Encanta, and Fogueres de Sant Joan, which commemorates its history (Iberic, Arab, and Christian). |
Guardamar del Segura is situated at the mouth of the segura river, the town has always held a key position as a guardian of the river.
Guardamar is becoming a very popular destination with both holidaymakers and full time residence. The town itself is one of very few typically Spanish towns left along the South Costa Blanca coast and is located near La Marina, Quesada, Rojales, Benijofar, Formentera and Torrevieja.
